Water for St. Andrew’s Nursery and Primary School, in western Uganda

IMG-20220825-WA0029

Thanks to donors like you, every year, the Missionaries of Africa in the U.S. are able to help with school supplies for classrooms and students in Africa. Supplies can range from simple things like pencils to more advanced educational technology like computers. Thanks to your support, we are also funding more dramatic school essentials, like walls, roofs, and running water. It is difficult for us to imagine running a school without a workable water source, but schools in Africa too often address water needs after building and starting a school.

St. Andrew’s Nursery and Primary School, in the Nyarushanje Catholic Parish in the Rukungiri District in western Uganda, is running a school without a reliable water source on campus.

Nyarushanje Catholic Parish is a diocesan parish but because the Missionaries of Africa also have a parish in the area, we want to help St. Andrew’s School as well. As you know, we do not limit our funding to our own missions but help worthy projects in areas where we serve.

Your contribution will be used to buy materials like water tanks, gutters, downspouts, and foundational materials like gravel and cement for this project and others like it. However, your contribution will truly be providing an essential school supply: water.

“We will tap rain water so that the pupils do not have to move long distances to fetch water for the school.”

St. Andrew’s Nursery and Primary School, in the Nyarushanje Catholic Parish in the Rukungiri District in western Uganda, is running a school without a reliable water source on campus.

The pastor, Father Garasiano Maniragada, says that students currently need to leave school premises to fetch water, but they have a plan to improve this situation. Father Maniragada says, “We will tap rain water so that the pupils do not have to move long distances to fetch water for the school.” The new system will use the roofs of the existing school buildings to collect water into cistern tanks for daily use.

Sometimes it is difficult to categorize the project we are funding. Is this a school project since we are adding to a school facility to aid the children, or is this a water project? In many ways this project is representative of the many, many projects you allow us to support, fitting into more than one category. Nyarushanje Catholic Parish is a diocesan parish but since the Missionaries of Africa also have a parish in the area, we want to help St. Andrew’s School as well. As you know, we do not limit our funding to our own missions but help worthy projects in areas where we serve.

In your local community, you can help the students in your community by taking interest in your local school. Maybe you can make a contribution towards a program or activity. Perhaps you could simply attend a sporting event or art program. Your presence demonstrates support for the school and will be enjoyable as well.

This winter, I am hoping we can raise $39,000 for the St. Andrew’s Nursery and Primary School and other schools in Africa that need your help to make water accessible for their students. Your contribution will be used to buy materials like water tanks, gutters, downspouts and foundational materials like gravel and cement. However, your contribution will truly be providing an essential school supply: water.

P.S. St. Andrew’s Nursery and Primary School is named for St. Andrew Kaggwa (May 26, 1856 – 1886), one of the Ugandan martyrs who was baptized by the Missionaries of Africa. Can you honor St. Andrew Kaggwa with a donation today?
