Support Our Mission in Mali: Give Clean Water & Hope

Parishioners with the three Missionaries of Africa priests from the community in Kadiolo, Mali.

In Mali, where Christians are a minority, the Missionaries of Africa have been serving since 1894. Now, they’re seeking support to provide clean water and hope to the community of Kadiolo. With a proposed cistern water system, they aim to combat water-related diseases and enhance agricultural opportunities, fostering better health and sustainability for the entire community. Your donation can make a significant difference in their mission to maintain a Catholic presence and improve lives in Mali.

Water-related diseases are the reason Father Landry is seeking this assistance.

The Missionaries of Africa serve in many countries where Christians are a distinct minority. This aligns naturally with our mission since our society was founded in 1868 in Algeria, North Africa, where Christians account for less than one percent of the population. In communities where Christians are a small minority, our missionaries bring the light of Christ.

One of the countries where the Missionaries of Africa are committed to bringing the hope of Christ to the people is Mali. Many may not know a lot about Mali. It is a landlocked country in West Africa, situated south of Algeria, north of Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast. The Catholic population is just under 500,000, representing less than 3% of the total population. The Missionaries of Africa have been serving in Mali since 1894.

One of our missionaries, Father Landry Busagara, M.Afr., is requesting help to create a cistern water system for the community house in Kadiolo, a town in southern Mali. The system will include a large metal tank on a tower to facilitate a gravity-fed technique, making the water more easily filtered and usable.

Water-related diseases are the reason Father Landry is seeking this assistance. He wrote, “This water tower system will help us fight against diseases caused by dirty water. Currently, we spend a lot of money on medications because of our water, and it is a true hardship.” Clean water will lead to better health for all in the community.

Furthermore, Father Landry mentioned that, with a better water system, the community will be able to expand their garden. At many of our missions, our priests and brothers grow a significant amount of their own food to support themselves and to share with others in the community.

Across southern Mali, Missionaries of Africa staff missions and run programs that aim to stabilize and support the Christian community. Often, these programs are community-based and include young people of all faiths in an effort to increase understanding and build cooperation.

Our collective goal is to raise $38,000 to aid our mission in Kadiolo and other programs in Mali. With your contribution, you become part of our efforts to maintain a Catholic presence in Mali.
