Bring Clean Water to West Africa This Easter

MAfr 2024christmas header

Access to clean water is a basic human right, but for many families in West Africa, it remains out of reach. In villages like Lergho, Burkina Faso, the water system is overwhelmed, and women and children spend hours each day walking long distances and waiting in long lines just to collect water. The current wells are no longer able to meet the needs of the growing population.

With the support of generous donors, the Missionaries of Africa are working to address this critical need by drilling new wells in villages like Lergho and beyond. These wells will provide not only water but also hope for a brighter future. By increasing access to clean, safe water, families will spend less time fetching water and more time focusing on education, work, and their health.

Every donation directly helps fund these essential water projects. The goal this Easter is to raise the funds necessary to support the drilling of new wells in communities across West Africa. Your support will make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most. Together, we can bring this vital resource to those in need, creating healthier, safer, and more hopeful futures.

Water is a key symbol in our Easter celebrations, representing new life

Dear Friend,

Sometimes, I feel inconvenienced when I have to share a bathroom. I know I am blessed to live in a country where I have all the water I need, whenever I want it. But it’s easy to forget how lucky I am. Simple things like figuring out who showers first can feel like a nuisance instead of a blessing.

That’s why I was struck by a request from the village of Lergho, Burkina Faso, asking for help to drill a new well. The letter said, “Currently, four wells are serving 1,500 residents.” I did the math—375 people share just one well. That made me feel embarrassed for complaining about my small inconveniences.

Lergho is a rural village in southeast Burkina Faso. The pastor, Father Deudonna Kere, says that the villagers travel long distances to work on surrounding farms, some as far as 25 miles away. Each night, they return home to the village, which offers security, a school, a church, basic healthcare, and, most importantly, water. Since it is safer, more people are moving there.

The village’s current wells are managed by the residents. Each family pays a small fee for maintenance, something they’ve been doing since 1985. But the system is becoming harder to manage. Women and children spend hours each day fetching water. The long lines and time it takes to fill containers and return home create a real hardship. Adding a fifth well would ease some of this burden and provide more reliable access to clean water.

As pastor, Father Kere has shared this urgent need with us. Can you help drill new wells in villages like Lergho in Burkina Faso? We are currently funding water projects in West Africa, with a special focus this Easter season on providing clean water to families in need.

Water is a key symbol in our Easter celebrations, representing new life. This Easter, when you turn on the tap, take a moment to thank God for the gift of water. Please also remember in your prayers those who still struggle to fetch and carry water every day. Your prayers are part of this mission too.

Thank you for being an important part of our work in Africa. We are so grateful for your continued support.

Your Missionary Friend,
