Confronting Illiteracy Through Education

h2601 fTR

In rural communities like Gyedna, Nigeria, illiteracy remains one of the greatest barriers to opportunity. When solar lighting made night classes possible at St. Luke’s Parish, adults and village leaders asked for something they had never had before: the chance to learn to read.

Your support helps the Missionaries of Africa provide literacy education for children and adults in Gyedna and across Africa, supplying the books, materials, and learning resources needed to turn access into opportunity and strengthen communities for the future. Give today!

“When the lights came on, the people asked to learn to read.”

— Father Otto Katto, M.Afr.

How Your Support Makes Literacy Possible

In communities like Gyedna, Nigeria, the desire to learn is not new. What has been missing is access. For generations, children and adults in this rural area have had little or no opportunity to attend school. Distance, poverty, and daily survival have kept education out of reach, even for those who long to learn.

Today, that is beginning to change. With the installation of solar lighting at St. Luke’s Parish, evening classes are finally possible. Adults who work in the fields during the day and children who help support their families now have a chance to learn at night. The response from the community has been immediate. Parents, youth, and village leaders have stepped forward asking for literacy classes, eager to gain skills that many elsewhere take for granted.

The Missionaries of Africa are responding by launching a new literacy program for children and adults in 2026. Classes will be taught in English and Hausa, helping learners gain practical reading and writing skills that can be used in daily life, work, and participation in parish and community leadership. Already, dozens of learners are prepared to enroll, and interest continues to grow.

Your support makes this possible by providing the basic tools of learning.

A gift of $25 provides a Literacy Starter Kit for one student, including books, writing materials, and essential learning supplies. For many learners, this will be the first time they have ever owned a book or held a pencil for the purpose of learning to read and write. Give Today.

Additional support allows the program to reach more children and adults, helps equip classrooms with shared learning resources, and ensures that teachers have what they need to guide students patiently and effectively. Over time, this support allows the literacy program to grow and adapt to the needs of the wider community.

By supporting literacy education in places like Gyedna and across Africa, you are helping individuals gain confidence, families strengthen their livelihoods, and communities build a more hopeful future. Literacy opens doors to opportunity, dignity, and participation, and your generosity helps ensure that the door is finally unlocked.
