Bring Healing to Africa This Lent

St Mary

Across Africa, Catholic hospitals and clinics provide essential medical care to millions of people every year. In many rural communities, these facilities are often the only place families can turn when illness strikes, when a child needs treatment, or when a mother is preparing to give birth.

The Catholic Church is one of the leading providers of health care in East Africa. Through the dedication of doctors, nurses, and hospital staff, these ministries bring quality, compassionate care to communities that would otherwise have very limited access to medical services.

“This is not about infrastructure; it’s about preserving human dignity, restoring hope, and providing quality health care in rural Tanzania. We need to bring the ward up to current Ministry of Health standards to avoid closure and ensure the continuity of lifesaving services in this region.”

Father Witness Rwegoshora, Director of St. Mary’s Hospital

The Missionaries of Africa are proud to partner with many of these hospitals and clinics across the continent. From maternity wards and pediatric care to surgical services and rural dispensaries, these facilities serve communities with professionalism, dignity, and faith.

One example of this important work is St. Mary’s Hospital in Isingiro, Tanzania.

For more than sixty years, St. Mary’s Hospital has served families across western Tanzania. The hospital provides a wide range of services including labor and delivery, pediatric care, surgery, and general medical treatment. Each year, thousands of patients depend on the hospital for care close to home.

Like many Catholic health facilities in Africa, St. Mary’s is a functioning hospital where patients contribute toward the cost of their care. However, major improvements and rebuilding projects are far beyond what local communities can afford.

Today, the General Ward building, built in 1961, must be rebuilt so St. Mary’s Hospital can continue providing safe and reliable care to the communities that depend on it.

Your support makes work like this possible.

Lenten gifts to the Missionaries of Africa strengthen Catholic health care ministries across Africa, helping hospitals and clinics improve facilities, provide equipment, and continue serving vulnerable communities with compassionate medical care.
