Give Children a Healthier Place to Learn
St. Stephen Kalakwi Parish School in eastern Uganda serves 700 students, but its sanitation facilities fall far short of what those children need. The parish hopes to replace the school’s blue portable toilets with safe, sanitary latrines for boys and girls, complete with sinks and water for handwashing. With your help, we can provide these students with a healthier, more dignified place to learn. Give today
"The current facilities are grossly inadequate, and students are forced to resort to nearby bushes."
Father Leon Gansonre, M.Afr. Pastor, St. Stephen Kalakwi Parish
When we think about what children need for a good education, bathrooms probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. But once you understand the situation at St. Stephen Kalakwi
Parish School, it’s hard to imagine not wanting to do something about it.
Each school day, 700 students fill the classrooms of this parish school in rural eastern Uganda. Yet the school’s sanitation facilities are grossly inadequate. The parish hopes to replace the blue portable toilets currently at the school with new latrines for both boys and girls, complete with real walls, roofs, sinks, and water for handwashing.
The new facilities will give students greater privacy and dignity while providing a healthier school environment. Good sanitation and access to water for handwashing can help students stay healthy and in the classroom, where they can concentrate on learning.
The families of St. Stephen are also doing their part. Parents will provide the labor they can and will house and feed the skilled masons, carpenters, and plumbers brought in to complete the work. Their contribution makes this a partnership between the local community and friends of the Missionaries of Africa.
St. Stephen Kalakwi Parish School is one of four school projects the Missionaries of Africa hope to support in Uganda this fall. Other needs include a three-classroom addition in Nebbi, improvements to a school’s water supply in Mbarara, and equipment for a vocational school in Kampala.
Our goal is to raise $27,500 to help fund these projects and other school needs identified by our missionaries across Africa. Your generosity will help make these projects a reality and give children healthier, safer schools where they can learn with dignity.
